You may or may not know, but I am an avid Twitterer. I love it. I love the conversations. I love the pace. I love the connections.

Now, I know that there are some who do not ‘get’ Twitter: who think it’s inane, vapid or just a complete waste of time. Well, I read a really excellent article about Twitter yesterday by the lovely Joanna Young, who was, incidentally, the first Scottish person I found on Twitter and has become a good friend. In it she explains why it is worth sticking with Twitter, and I just had to share a few of her words with you:

Twitter is not just micro-blogging, but interwoven conversations. Threads of words woven together. Which means getting to know people, over days, and weeks till they become more than just followers, or fans, but friends.

Last week, I had the opportunity to connect offline with some of my Twitter friends at the Edinburgh Twestival, with the added benefit of raising money for Charity: Water. While I was there, I was interviewed for Scottish Television’s Five Thirty Show, and I thought I’d share it with you. It was a really fun night and I think the clip really captures the atmosphere of the place.

The Edinburgh Twestival on STV from Jim Wolff on Vimeo.

What really amazed me though was the strength of these connections made online. Apart from Joanna, I had not met any of these people in the flesh. I hadn’t heard their words, their laughs or their accents and yet I hear their voices through Twitter every day. And so when we finally met at the Twestival, we felt as though we were old friends. It truly was a wonderful experience – one which could never have happened without Twitter.

Now, if you’re still feeling a bit resistant to Twitter have a read through of Joanna’s post and then check out my previous posts on Twitter: Lessons From My 1st Week on Twitter & How Twitter Helped Me Meet My Deadline. If you decide to give it a go, you can follow me & I’ll be more than happy to help you out with it, answer your questions and introduce you to some fellow twitterers.

Go on, give it a go!
