Approaching Autumn

The Turning of the Ivy

Fresh green surrounds red:
futile to withstand a fast
approaching autumn.

What signs of autumn can you see around you?  Are you looking forward to the approaching autumn or are you already missing the summer?

  • Amy, I’m finding the start of autumn in my new environment very exciting and uplifting. I love watching the change in colours in the far off hills, in the light on the water, on the trees in my garden.

I noticed something today when I was working outside: I could hear the leaves falling. It sent shivers down my spine to hear as well as see the start of the season.

  • Beautiful photo Amy, and so nice to see you out and about.

I was out yesterday taking photos of the emerging spring here in Brisbane… the flowering trees and the new leaves, bright green, unfurling everywhere I look.

It is always a jolt to remember that you’re leaving the warmer months as we head into them.

Looks like my part of the woods, too. :-)

Leaves are starting to fall from the trees in the yard, though the brilliant colors have yet to appear. The farmers are bringing their apples and cider to market on the weekends. There’s nothing like a fresh Macintosh. Summer was stressful in my family. With the approaching autumn, refreshing changes have taken place in my life, and hopefully it’ll only get better.

Wow Amy! Your photograph is absolutely breathtaking. I think it truly captures the essence of fall. Thanks for sharing!

  • Here in Manchester it feels like the summer has finally arrived. Yet the leaves are falling, and the darkness suddenly falls at 7:30, taking you by surprise. Great to have you back taking photos and posting.

  • Lovely photo, Amy! Well, it’s raining and cloudy all the time, so I cannot say there aren’t enough signs! it’s cold and humid, although the leaves have only started to change colors. I think this autumn needs a bit more sun :)

  • Here in Berlin the nights are getting fresh, and the leaves of some the trees are changing into yellow. In the morning, when I have to get up, it is still dark outside, and I’ve to put on the lights in my flat. That’s something I have to get used to, because I have difficulties getting into gear in the morning anyway, and the darkness makes it worse. It’s raining at the moment, and so I miss summer a bit. But your beautiful picture reminds me of the colours of autumn – it makes my day!

  • Beautiful photograph, Amy. It’s fun to read these comments and learn how autumn is progressing in different parts of the world. Here in the Chicago area of the U.S., we’re having the rebirth of summer. We got about 9 inches of rain a week ago and the trees, which were preparing to turn, have been rejuvinated. Everything is green and summer like, very unusual.

  • I live in New England, where we’re famous for our autumns. The leaves are turning, the nights are getting downright cold, and the apples are ripe for the picking. For all that I DESPISE the cold and brutality of New England winters, I can’t hold autumn accountable for being a harbinger of such things – it’s just too pretty around here to resent what comes after. There’ll be PLENTY of time to gripe about the grey cold in December…

  • Hi Amy! I love, love, love Autumn! Although it has only been 24 hours, the air has already changed. The clean crisp smell of the season is in the air and reminds you that soon it will filled with the scent of cinnamon, spices and crackling fires. A few of the leaves have also started to change from green to golden. It is lovely.

  • Beautiful photo. Everything here (in Utah) is now coming to a last bloom. Wish it would last this way forever :-) . But I know it won’t, and I am bracing myself for winter (I am not a cold-weather person). So for now I will enjoy nature’s last hurrah, and long-sleeved days and a hot cup of chocolate on brisk mornings, soccer games and children running in the house with pink cheeks, snuggling under the blanket with a good book…

Summer seems like so long ago.

  • Watching the seasons change in a new home brings such delight, does it not, Joanna? Wishing you a fabulous west coast Autumn!

It is strange the difference in the seasons, isn’t it, Karen? I remember our first trip to Australia and from our summer to an Aussie winter – completely threw me!

It’s amazing how similar our two parts of the world are, Bo :-)

I’m wishing you a restful Autumn, Qwis, full of crisp, blue sky mornings, rustling burnished leaves, and, of course, juicy apples!

Thanks Stephanie! I was pleased with how that pic turned out, although I was a bit put off at first by the brown edge of the leaf. I’ve now decided it makes the pic all the more special :-)

It’s the getting dark early that always catches me out too, David, although I do love the dark evenings – I love to feel safe and warm and cosy in my house while the early evening dusk settles outside. Gives me a great feeling of security. The dark mornings, however, I’m not so keen on!

Well, Alina, we’ve been getting quite a lot of sun despite our really poor Summer. Sending some Autumn sunshine your way :-)

It’s so hard to get going in the morning when it’s still dark outside, isn’t it, Ulla? When I lived on the north coast of Scotland, it wouldn’t get properly light in the morning till around 10ish. You didn’t really want to go out much at all!

I so agree with you, Brad! Finding out how Autumn is progress (or how Spring is, depending on the hemisphere in question!), around the globe is just fascinating. Thanks for contributing how it’s going in your neck of the woods.

Autumn is too pretty to begrudge it for preceding winter, Mrs Chili. I do so hope you have such a lovely Autumn that it tides you through to the following Spring :-)

I’m with you, Karen, I think Autumn has to be my favourite of all the seasons. It certainly has some of the best fragrances, doesn’t it!

Oh, I love that Pink Ink: ‘nature’s last hurrah’! That’s a great way to think of it – so accurate. Mmm, hot chocolate sounds good – I wonder if I have some in the cupboard…

I think you’re going to enjoy Autumn, Avani-Mehta. Where will you be this season?

That was lovely, Kara. Thank you so much for contributing it :-)

  • What a wonderful picture, Amy!

I notice Autumn coming more and more when I’m out walking my Little Dog. So many fallen leaves on the ground in so many beautiful colours. I like to walk through them and spread them out; Little Dog likes to sniff them and turn them over with her nose.
