A Well-Earned Break

Last Friday I took a rare break from writing the thesis, and headed through to Edinburgh.  As the sun was getting ready to set, we went for a walk out at Musselburgh Race Course.  It was the perfect antidote to the mounting stress of deadlines, footnotes and word counts.  Even just thinking back to it, I can feel the tension leaving my stiff knotted shoulders.  Here are a few shots from that evening, and while you look at them take a deep breath with me and release all those worries and cares… for a short while at least…

  • Tell me about your thesis? I’m considering plunging back into school, but I’m collecting stories before I make any decisions.

I’m afraid my usual de-stress solutions aren’t exactly healthy ones. The involve edibles and either a good book or DVD movies…

  • I take my camera for a walk (well, when the air is breathable, at least) ;) I play with my cats. Or go for a motorcycle ride. Or hide in a book.

  • Going for a walk is a good thing for me, too. Or: having some pieces of chocolate / a glass of wine / a shower with an extraordinary shower gel. Or: listening to music (classic, folk, good old rock’n roll). Or: Dance the stress away. Or: meeting good friends.

  • Amy, I am breathing deeply and relaxing with you. Being outside always calms me. I go for a run or take a walk and simply “notice” things – the sky, water, trees. It is infinitely calming to stop and appreciate the awesome beauty of the natural world. It also makes me feel more connected and grounded to something bigger than my temporary stress.

  • Breathtaking photos. I wrote a thesis once. 70 pages on the role of audience in rhetoric. I drank a lot of coffee that I liked and took time to play. It looks like you have the play down. Stay loose!

  • To relax I like to listen to movie soundtracks, curl up with a good book and a cup of mint tea,or take a looong shower/bath. Beautiful pictures as well.

  • Again – amazing photos! Wow. Good for you for working on your thesis. It will be done- one tiny inch at a time.

Um… stress? I work out every day. I recently found these CDs called Holosync. They make your brain meditate – and they really work. Amazing.

    ((hug)) Amy!

  • I wish you luck and strength for the rest. Plus missing your tweets, but that’s not that important :)
The photos are great, and you are right to take breaks from the writing!

    Cheering on here :)

  • You have no idea how evocative that bus-stop photo is. I can feel the air, practically smell it!

When I’m stressed, there are certain readings and certain music in which I immerse myself, which always do the trick.

  • Hi Amy

Please forgive the intrusion, but I’d be grateful if you could maybe put out a shout about my blogathon 2008. I’m trying to raise money for Christian Children’s Fund–a child sponsorship charity–by blogging for 24 hours straight, starting tomorrow (actually Sunday early for you, but where I am it will be 5pm I think.) If it’s anything like last year it had all the air of a festival with over 60 bloggers blogging for their various charities. I’d love some encouragement, questions to answer as well as (of course) pledges/donations!

The info I have currently is listed above, but I will be putting up a more informative page tomorrow!

  • Lovely photos! I love going out for a walk when I’m stressed and Edinburgh and the surrounding area is so full of great places to walk to and around!

  • Is that the bus stop? I love that pic. Our bus stops are surrounded by advertising magazines and cement. You live in a very photogenic country!
