Capturing Rainbows: Flickr Group Challenge

Rainbow

Are you all ready for a new photography challenge? You are? Just as well I’m launching a new one today then!

I’ve been trying to decide which challenge should follow up our time-capsule one, and I’ve decided on a colour-based challenge. This challenge comes from a comment Bob Leckridge left on the Photography Less Ordinary discussion board, and I’ll certainly be returning there for suggestions for future challenges. Bob suggests that we take a series of photographs which focus on colour, and you can check his Colour Week collection out to see an example. I’ve tried this before, and was astounded how my eye was drawn to my chosen colour – I seemed to see it everywhere. A real exercise in opening our eyes to the colourful world we inhabit!

So, the way I’m going to work it is I’m going to start comment topics over at the group’s Flickr home for each of the colours (a wonderful suggestion from LindaH) , and I’m going to give you just under 2 weeks to post a photo to each topic. What I recommend is that you choose one of the colours to focus on for one full day, and take as many photos as you can featuring that colour. You can then make a set, choose the best photo, submit it to the comment topic and link to your set, so we can see all the other shots you took that day.

The colour topics that you can choose from are as follows:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Purple

It is completely up to yourselves whether you want to have a go at all the colours or only one or two. I do think you’ll get the most out of the project if you have a go at all of them though. I’m going to make the cut off date the 27th of June, so I can write a round up post, but the comment topics will remain open if you want to have a go at a future date.

If you want to join in you’ll need to be a member of my Flickr group, Photography Less Ordinary. To become a member all you need to do is add me as a contact, and I will send you an invite. We have such a wonderful community over there – you really are most welcome to join us!

So, what do you think of the new challenge? Looking forward to it? Which colour do you think you’ll choose first? What do you hope to get out of this challenge?

  • It’s a great idea Amy. I started focusing on colours when out walking as part of a writing exercise, and I now do it often to add some colour and brilliance when I’m out and about. It’s amazing how much the world changes when we filter for one thing, and how much colour we notice that we’d otherwise miss.

It often makes me laugh how many objects of that colour the universe seems to throw in my way as if to say “look at this!” “and this!” I’ve not done it yet with a photographic focus, but I’m sure it’ll generate some good creative results too.

Thanks for the prompt and the challenge (and this lovely big comment box, I love it!)

  • I would love to play. As a single mum working full time, I only really gets the weekend to do photography. I will have to work on red, yellow and green this weekend and blue and purple the following.

This is a really cool idea by the way. Well done to Bob for thinking of this theme

  • This challenge sounds fun! I think blues and greens will pop out at me first, but we’ll see!

Since my land is inundated with flood water right now, I shall start with all that water reflecting blue and make some good of a hard situation. Then maybe yellow.

  • Joanna, I agree, what a wonderful creative project … and one that’s sure to enhance my focus on appreciation and gratitude at the moment. It’s lovely to have the inspiring examples of Bob and yourself, thank you!

    And thank you to Bob!

Liss … Wow! Single Mum, working full time and you still find time to stop and appreciate a special moment … and then find the time to share it with us! Sounds like you have two lovely weekends planned … enjoy!

Leslie, I agree, this challenge sounds like endless fun! Looking for colours, capturing them, sharing them with each other … and the fun begins right at the beginning, with choosing a colour to start with. Have fun!

Bo, what a wonderful way to turn a negative into an amazing and (knowing you) incredibly beautiful postive. Looking forward to seeing your colours!

Amy, so excited about this project, and so enjoying the Photography Less Ordinary experience, thank you!

And thanks to all the lovely folk on there that make it such a beautiful place to hang out … have fun, everyone! :o )

Since we did not have a new contribution for you today, I thought I would share this from some notes I have just added to my Flickr account (new digital learning for me right now!) Those of us who participate…

  • The entries to this challenge are already coming in and they really are all such a treat! Thanks to everyone for participating so enthusiastically. I just know we’re going to end up with a truly astonishing rainbow by the end of June :-)

It is a wonderful idea and just what it took to pull me out of lurking to join. Now I just have to get my bearing in the group and learn the ins and outs of the group and how this all works.

  • Apparently I can only add five items per week to this group, which ain’t going to work. ;)

Here’s the link to my color post. It will be live in about three hours’ time, at 08:13 am your time.

    Hugs,
    Linda
